Women in Business Spring Series to Launch
The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce will kick off its "Women in Business" Spring Luncheon Series on April 14. The series, entitled "Business Success - Inside and Out," is designed to motivate participants to strive for business success through evaluation and improvement - beginning with self.
"The theme for the Spring Series is important for every business," said Dr. Deidre Martin, University of South Carolina Aiken, and the Chamber's vice chair of Business and Community Development. "Employees are certainly the most valuable resource for any organization and taking steps to ensure that employees are healthy and productive is key to the bottom line."
Women in Business Committee Chair Liz Neal, The Hills of Cumberland Village, agreed. "We feel that this series adds value to business by showing women that being healthy and looking good leads to success in the working world. When a person is in top condition - the best she can be - then confidence grows, decision making is clear, and the business, and the person, have the potential for success," Neal said.
"Nurture Yourself - Eat Right to Look and Feel Your Best" is the title of the first luncheon on April 14. It will address healthy eating for women, including tips on how to select healthy foods without sacrificing taste. The session will be presented by Jackie Enlund, dietitian with the Diabetes and Nutrition Teaching Center of Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Enlund, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian in the state of South Carolina, has been practicing in the field of nutrition for more than 15 years.
The second part in the spring series, "Get Physical - Get Active" will be held May 26 and will focus on steps to a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Dr. Brian B. Parr, assistant professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at USCA, will share how to start an exercise program to get and stay physically healthy for lifelong health and wellness.
Dr. Parr teaches courses in exercise physiology, nutrition, physical activity, obesity, and health at USCA. He also conducts research focusing on weight loss and physical activity. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and is certified as a Clinical Exercise Specialist.
For the third and final session on June 16, Lee Cavanaugh, wardrobe consultant with Doncaster, will guide participants in learning how to dress professionally while establishing a personal image for business success. The session, entitled "Discovering Your Fashion Persona," will provide tips on how to dress for work, including those "business casual" days.
Cavanaugh has helped women find their "dress" personality and achieve optimum proportioned fit for the past 13 years. As a wardrobe consultant, she works with women in determining their life wheel - the percentage of time spent at work, with family, with friends, and alone - to help them achieve their individual dress personality.
"I think this is going to be a great series for our women in business," said Dr. Martin. "We've designed it so that attendees can add value to their lunch time by meeting other business women and gaining valuable information at the same time. I encourage everyone to attend and learn how to achieve business success, inside and out," she said.
